LC008 – Explicitly Teaching Phonology, Orthography and Morphology

Explicitly Teaching Phonology, Orthography and Morphology to Support Word Reading and Spelling

This comprehensive three-course package provides a practical, evidence-informed pathway for explicitly teaching the phonological, orthographic and morphological components of word reading and spelling.

Course Detail

This comprehensive three-course package provides a practical, evidence-informed pathway for explicitly teaching the phonological, orthographic and morphological components of word reading and spelling. Together, these interconnected linguistic components help educators understand how speech sounds, written patterns, word structure and meaning work together to support literacy development.
Begin by exploring the phonological foundations of English, including syllables, vowel and consonant phonemes, segmenting, blending and other essential phonological skills. Learn how to provide explicit and differentiated phonological instruction for beginning readers and writers, as well as students with more advanced literacy skills.
Progress to the orthographic component of word reading and spelling by examining how students develop heightened sensitivity to written word patterns and conventions. Explore how orthographic conventions may be context dependent, generalisable or informed by etymology, and discover how orthographic instruction fits within Daffern’s multifaceted instructional routine, ART PhOrM™.
Complete the pathway with a comprehensive exploration of morphology—the structure and meaning of words. Examine how systematic morphological instruction can improve spelling accuracy, vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension, grammar and writing. The course also clarifies the distinction between morphology and etymology and explains when, why and how etymological information may be selectively incorporated into morphological instruction.
Across all three courses, engage with authentic classroom lesson demonstrations, practical teaching ideas, interactive learning experiences and curated resources. Discover how to differentiate instruction and connect phonological, orthographic and morphological learning with vocabulary, grammar, texts and subject areas across the curriculum.
This 14-hour package includes:
LC004 – Explicitly Teaching Phonology to Support Word Reading and Spelling
LC005 – Explicitly Teaching Orthography to Support Word Reading and Spelling
LC006 – Explicitly Teaching Morphology to Support Word Reading and Spelling
