This course focuses on a core aspect of explicitly teaching spelling grounded in Triple Word Form Theory: crossmapping using multiple linguistic lenses. Dr Daffern unpacks the what, why, when, and how of implementing this innovative instructional framework, which stems from her PhD and more than a decade of subsequent research on using guiding questions during crossmapping tasks. Dr Daffern’s research demonstrates that learning to spell words requires developing the phonological, orthographic, and morphological lenses, and, crucially, that children must learn how to crossmap the interrelationships among these three linguistic word forms. Crossmapping is therefore not an optional extension but a fundamental process that supports students to coordinate these word forms when analysing, reading, and spelling words. This powerful evidence‑based instructional framework explicitly supports students to integrate the phonological, orthographic, and morphological lenses. Through clear explanations and practical examples, the module equips educators to implement cross‑mapping tasks with precision, flexibility, and confidence.
