In this Literacy Short, you will explore how assessment and error analysis can be used to understand students’ developing spelling skills in the first three years of school. Drawing on the phonological, orthographic and morphological components of spelling, the seminar examines how assessment data can identify specific learning needs and inform targeted, differentiated instruction. You will also explore approaches to monitoring students’ progress from acquisition to retention and transfer, including how spelling knowledge is applied in words, sentences and authentic writing contexts.
